TENP media alumna clinches young female journalist award

Rising from TENP to national recognition

The awards, which brought together leading voices in journalism and media, aimed to spotlight excellence and amplify the contributions of women shaping Kenya’s media landscape. Judges noted that Achieng stood out in a highly competitive field, citing her dedication, resilience, and impact in a male-dominated profession.

Her recognition places TENP among institutions nurturing talent that is now gaining national visibility and influence in the media industry.

An emotional milestone

Speaking shortly after receiving the award, an emotional Achieng described the moment as both overwhelming and fulfilling.

“I was shaking when my name was called,” she said with a smile. “This is my award in the media industry. It has given me a different kind of strength and motivation to go beyond the sky and overcome all odds.”

A defining moment in the field

Achieng’s journey has also been shaped by unique field experiences. While covering an assignment in Uasin Gishu County, she encountered President William Ruto’s mother, Sarah Ruto, who advised her on her attire and offered her a leso to cover herself.

Rather than taking offence, Achieng embraced the moment as a lesson in humility and cultural respect.

“I was deeply touched by the president’s mother correcting me,” she recalled. “She even gave me a Maasai kikoi, which I used to cover myself. I respect my elders, and I believe learning is a continuous process.”

Breaking barriers behind the camera

Professionally, Achieng has carved out a unique space as one of the few female camera operators in Kenya’s North Rift region. Based in Eldoret, she works alongside Citizen TV reporter John Wanyama, delivering compelling visuals and high-quality footage.

Her role, often seen as physically demanding and traditionally male-dominated, involves handling heavy equipment and covering breaking news on the frontlines.

“Camera work is my passion,” she said. “It’s not just about capturing images; it’s about telling stories that matter.”

Beyond the newsroom

Beyond her professional work, Achieng is also an active digital content creator and a devoted member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she participates in choir activities. Her ability to balance career, faith, and personal growth reflects discipline and commitment.

Inspiring the next generation

As she celebrates this milestone, Achieng remains focused on breaking more barriers and inspiring young women to pursue careers in media.

Her success story not only highlights personal determination but also underscores the role of The Eldoret National Polytechnic in nurturing industry-ready professionals.

With growing recognition and unwavering passion, Ziporah Achieng Owigo is not just making headlines — she is redefining the place of women in Kenya’s media industry.
