The Department of Building & Civil Engineering has continued expanding and becoming popular. The department started with an enrolment of nine students taking Diploma in Civil Engineering. Currently, it has 268 students taking a variety of courses initiated by the department. The performance of the department is also encouraging with a steady increase from one pass in 2007 to the current total of 42 diploma graduates and 10 higher national diploma graduates. We expect to perform even better in the coming years. The number of courses offered are market driven but in tandem with curriculum regulations. We are in the process of designing competency based curricular in specific trades such as plumbing, painting, tile fitting, roofing works, cabinet making, brick laying, brick making, terrazzo/ granolithic finishing, rendering and plastering and paving. With the ultra modern Building and Civil Engineering Workshops sponsored by African Development Bank completed and fully operational, we are ready to offer these CBET programmes.
The department also boasts of having a diverse faculty covering most of the areas of training. We have been involved in the construction of various projects on which our students derive the requisite practical skills necessary for the world of work. The growth of Eldoret town gives us a ready market for our graduates in employment and consultancy services. In liaison with the Ministry of Public Works and the Standard Gauge Railway Project, our students have been able to gain additional practical lessons especially in the materials testing labs. Our students also get industrial attachments in firms such as DITTMAN Construction Company, WALLUKAT Construction Company, BOWEN Building Contractors, county governments, Ministry of Roads and Public Works, M’BIG Limited Construction Company, OMAS Building and Construction Enterprise, VICTORY Construction Company, Lake Victoria North Water Services Board, Kenya Power Company, KENGEN and ARM Cement Ltd just to mention but a few. We have continuously partnered with these firms to equip our trainees with the current trends in the construction industry.
These companies later absorbed our students after completion of their studies. We pride of achieving above 90% placement of all our graduates every year both nationally and internationally. We would like to thank the Governing Council and the Government of Kenya for their endless effort in supporting the programs of the department. Their support has seen the construction of an ultra – modern Building and Civil Engineering Block to further enhance the learning process. Finally, we recognize The Eldoret National Polytechnic Administrative Structure and the entire Students Population and Staff for their continued contribution towards the growth of academic and infrastructure of the whole Polytechnic. Our plea is that your support should be intensified further to nurture this institution to even greater heights as we contribute to the achievement of Kenya Vision 2030. We welcome all prospective students who wish to join the department for it is the best choice you will have made to your future.“Hong
